Concrete Canvas

Flexible, concrete-filled geosynthetic erosion control mats that provide a thin and durable concrete layer when hydrated

Concrete canvas erosion control mats are part of a revolutionary class of new, innovative materials called Geosynthetic Cementitious Composite Mats (GCCMs). Concrete-filled geosynthetic cloth is flexible and provides a thin, yet durable, concrete later when hydrated. This is accomplished due to its 3D fiber matrix geotextile which both contains dry concrete fibers and reinforces the concrete once hydrated, and its PVC backing ensures the material is completely waterproof. Essentially, it is concrete on a roll. Simply hydrate the concrete canvas by spraying it or fully immersing it in water. Once set, fibers reinforce the concrete. Consequently, this prevents crack propagation and provides a safe plastic failure mode.

How do mining, rail, civil, petrochemical, and agricultural applications use concrete canvas?

  • Channel Lining
  • Lagoon Lining
  • Culvert Lining
  • Concrete Repair
  • Slope Protection
  • Roads

Typically, concrete canvas installs up to 10 times faster than traditional concrete. Furthermore, it has 5 times the abrasion resistance in comparison to standard OPC concrete and excellent chemical resistance, weathering performance, and UV resistance. It is available in three thicknesses: CC5TM (5mm), CC8TM (8mm), and CC13TM (13mm). For slopes 1:1 and steeper, use this geotextile with percussion anchors for increased protection. Because it can not be over-hydrated, it is a breeze to install – even during wet weather conditions or underwater. Not to mention, it is highly impermeable with a hydraulic conductivity greater than 1 x 10^-11 m/s. Lastly, it has a high-visibility welding strip for thermally bonding joints when necessary.

What are geosynthetic cementitious composite mats, also known as GCCMs or concrete canvas?

Geosynthetic cementitious composite mats, also referred to as concrete liners or concrete canvas, encapsulate engineered grout between layers of geotextile. When saturated, the mat cures to create a shell of fiber-reinforced concrete for erosion control. These concrete canvas rolls are used widely for new construction and containment and fluid conveyance infrastructure rehabilitation. Because of their innovative and simplified installation, professionals across a diverse range of sectors, such as mining, road, rail, civil, petrochemical, and agriculture implement GCCMs for erosion control.

What is the main benefit of concrete canvas?

In comparison to traditional concrete, concrete canvas rolls or GCCMs are installed with great ease. Civil engineers and construction professionals simply smooth the subgrade and then roll the concrete cloth in place. If the area has obstructions or abnormal geometry then simply cut and retrofit the concrete cloth on site. Not to mention, the flexible nature of the GCCM allows it to move with varying subgrades before cracking like traditional slope paving might. Please note that it is important to overlap it at the seams. Once the concrete roll is covering the area, add water to achieve adequate saturation of the grout.
