AMI Infrastructure Installation
Ferguson Waterworks helps the City of Umatilla, Florida migrate their utilities from an Automatic Meter Reading (AMR) system to an Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) system.

Project Overview
The City of Umatilla, Florida required upgrading an AMR (Automatic Meter Reading) system to an AMI (Advanced Metering Infrastructure) system across seven different installation sites. Furthermore, all seven locations had different constraints and considerations.
Challenge
Site visits and evaluations were necessary to determine the correct migration strategy, review site-specific restraints, and minimize city disruptions. For example, one unique constraint required solar panel installation and a collector on a light pole at a county park. All of which required city approval in order to drive a 15,000-pound boom lift on the property. The county approved the request, conditionally.
- No divots
- The sports field would be left untouched
- Irrigation lines were unaffected
How did Ferguson Waterworks appease the city meanwhile fulfilling the AMI integration needs?
In order to meet these conditions, we suggested two options. Option one used the shortest distance, however, we would need to remove a small fence to drive the lift to the light pole. The second option was a longer route that required driving a third of a mile in a lift that operates at a 3-mile-per-hour maximum. With this approach, we would continuously place 100-pound mats in front of the tires until we reached the location. In that instance, we chose option one.
Solution
Ferguson Waterworks put a team together that completed the migration without disrupting the customer’s daily operation. Not only did we build a plan to install all locations with minimal disruptions to the city, but we also requested a project extension due to a 65-day FAA approval process delay.
What are the benefits of upgrading from an AMR to an AMI system?
- No reprogramming endpoints for fixed network reading
- Daily leak, reverse flow, and other alerts from E-CODER equipment meters
- Maintain compatibility with existing R900s deployed
- On-demand read capability
